The world’s best value-for-money wine
The wine is the only Spanish entry in the international Top 10
Muga Reserva 2021 from Bodegas Muga has been named Wine Value of the Year 2025 by Wine Spectator, leading the ranking of the world’s top ten wines in terms of quality-price ratio with 92 points and a price of $39.
The Rioja Reserva leads a ranking with 80,000 cases produced
Barcelona, 27/01/26
Wine Spectator’s annual list highlights wines with more than 90 points on its rating scale, a maximum price of $40 (between 34 and 39 euros) in the US market, good availability, and significant production. Muga Reserva 2021 tops the ranking with 92 points, a reference price of $39, 80,000 cases produced, and 15,000 imported to the United States.
It is the only Spanish wine in a top 10 that includes references from top-tier regions such as California, Oregon, Piedmont (Italy), New Zealand, Uruguay, and France. The wine is a Rioja Reserva made with native varieties typical of the DOCa Rioja: 75% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha, 6% Mazuelo, and 4% Graciano.
It ferments in oak vats and ages for 24 months in barrels from the winery’s own cooperage (80% French oak and 20% American), followed by at least 12 months in the bottle. This process combines Riojan tradition with technical control and precision, highlighting the exclusivity of Bodegas Muga having its own master cooper, a unique practice in Spain.
Wine Spectator highlights mineral freshness and well-defined tannins
Wine Spectator describes the wine as fresh and mineral on the nose, evolving into notes of cherry and plum, ground coffee, smoked paprika, and dried herbs, with well-defined tannins and a long, savory finish. It is a perfect example of how Rioja offers high quality, regional character, and accessibility at reasonable prices.
This award adds to Bodegas Muga’s successful track record with the publication. In the previous year (2024), the 2020 vintage had already been recognized as the best Spanish wine in the world’s Top 100 ranking. Furthermore, in 2025, its wine Aro 2021 topped the list of best high-end Rioja wines, which also featured references such as Prado Enea Gran Reserva 2016 and the 2023 rosé.
Juan Muga, Sales and Marketing Director, stated that this award values “consistency, coherence, and respect for origin,” as well as the wines’ ability to connect with global consumers. It serves as a boost to remain faithful to the essence of Rioja and the commitment to long-term quality.
The winemaker emphasizes the faithful expression of Riojan terroir
Winemaker Pablo Orio has defined it as “a tribute to the work in the vineyard and the winery,” noting that the 2021 harvest represents “the most faithful expression of our terroir and our vision of Rioja: tradition, precision, and constant quality.” The vintage reflects the optimal weather conditions of that year in the DOCa Rioja.
With this recognition, Bodegas Muga consolidates its position as an international benchmark for DOCa Rioja, proving that Spanish wine can lead global rankings of the highest demand. The award combines oenological excellence, loyalty to the territory, and an excellent quality-price ratio that makes it both accessible and aspirational.
The distinction reinforces Rioja’s positioning in the US market, where the demand for quality Spanish wines at reasonable prices maintains a growing trend. Recognition from Wine Spectator, a world-leading publication with over three million readers, provides significant international visibility for both the winery and the appellation.
